Development of Beckmann Volmer Steel Technology Co. in China
Beckmann Volmer Steel Technology Co. Ltd. was established in mid 2006 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Beckmann Volmer Group of Companies. It was easy to locate a suitable site for the company in China: “Qingdao” immediately appeared highly attractive. Not only does this city have a port to enable products to be transported to distant cities and countries. There are also a number of shipyards in Qingdao and a well-known company of the railway supply industry. For Beckmann Volmer it was a matter of being able to find talented and experienced employees for the steel construction business.
In June 2006, after all of the necessary contracts had been signed, building commenced at the new location. Once construction of the plant was completed in November 2006, a small team of 18 employees started production on an initial area of 2000 m². All of the products manufactured in Qingdao were originally sent to Germany. The products were goods that had previously been manufactured abroad, too. The aim of the management was not to shift production from Germany but, on the contrary, to expand production at all of the locations.
After just a short time, European customers such as Vestas, REpower and Avantis, which have branches in China, became customers of Beckmann Volmer Steel Technology in China. Chinese customers were not far behind them.
The largest customer in Qingdao, for instance, is the Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Goldwind, which holds an important market position in China. The consequence of this successful development on the Chinese market is that all of the currently available capacity was rapidly exhausted by regional buyers, meaning that Beckmann Volmer Steel Technology is presently producing 100 per cent for the Chinese market.
As in Germany and Poland, mainly products for wind turbines are produced in Qingdao, from small steel angles to large mainframes. There is a huge need for electricity in China, which is constantly increasing because housing developments are springing up across the country. This is why China needs all types of power generation. Nuclear power stations, coal-fired power stations, hydro-electric power stations, solar fields and wind parks are being constructed to meet this enormous demand. According to the press, China intends to generate 100-130 gigawatts of electricity from wind power by 2020. In view of the fact that wind turbines produce 2 megawatts on average, it is clear that this is a very ambitious goal, with great potential for this market.
In order to meet the growing demands of our clients in China, we must expand our production space to create more capacity. The new production site in Qingdao was inaugurated in August 2009. Since then, Beckmann Volmer Steel Technology Co. has been producing on an area of approximately 11.500 qm, with a planned staff body of 250 working in two shifts.
